Temporomandibular dysfunction is one of various disorders that happens in between the temporomandibular joint. The TMJ is a link joint that helps the jaw with everyday complicated movements. Examples: eating swallowing, talking and some facial expressions the require movement of the mandible and jaw joint.
The temporomandibular joint is made of capsule, retrodiscal tissue and an articular disc. The capsule is a fibrous membrane that surrounds the joint and attaches the articular eminence, articular disc and the neck of the mandibular condyle. There is a fibrous extension the runs between the capsule and the two articular surfaces of the temporomandibular joint called the articular disc. The disc divides the joint into two sections and each section has its own synovial membrane. Connected to the articular disc is a tissue called retrodiscal tissue which connects the articular disc to the superior head of the lateral pterygoid and the lower mandible head. Doctors will often recommend patients to take over the counter pills that help relieve pain and are anti-inflammatory like Tylenol, Advil or ibuprofen.
