Teenage Conformity: The Psychology Behind the Adoption of Fashion Trends Why as humans, do we feel the need to join in on fashion trends which may only last as season? In todays society, we have a general tendency to follow and conform to trends that have been bestowed upon us. This essay will shine light on how certain factors, like how our brain functions, control the trends we tend to pick up on and the trends we seem to dismiss. The world is far more controlled by fashion and changing trends than many of us realize. Fashion. When you hear that word a few things may instantly pop up in your head. You may very well think of supermodels that strut around on a runway in expensive name brand outfits. Or you could think of movies like Confessions of a Shopaholic, and The Devil Wears Prada. But what you most likely don't think of is an art, a passion, or a lifestyle. Fashion plays an extremely important role in an individual’s life. It’s considered as a means of self- expression. But how did those clothes get there? ?A “trend” in fashion indicates that acceptance of a new, and latest design. According to Jennifer Baumgartner, novelty, trends…reinvention…and technology create the underlying current that drives the fashion force. Every generation has their own style; something that makes them stand out against the previous generations. So why does our generation choose to wear the clothing that they do? The short span of trends is what makes them so desirable to us. It mainly has to do with the gray matter inside our brain! Baumgartner reports that the gray matter responds fondly to new things (Baumgartner 1). When new things are presented to us, working memory, visual processes, and problem solving are all enhanced in the process of the trends our brain gets drawn to.
