Stalking has been a controversial issue due to that the majority of the behaviors did not cause physical harm to the victim. It was not until recent years, after several high profile stalking cases, that laws regarding stalking come into existence. While digital technology and social media can be useful, even to the victims that have suffered abuse, perpetrators can also use the technology against their victims to stalk, harass or even bully, with an access to their victims that traditional stalking never provided. I grew up in the time when computers first began to come into homes and when the internet was first coming to fruition and technology has been a part of all my adult life. The biggest challenge for me was when my two boys grew into the age of regularly using technology and the internet. There are a couple of things that I learned that I think it is important for any parent. First, you need to pay attention to some potential warning signs. Be aware of what your child is doing. If they begin to withdraw from the family and are spending a lot of time on-line, even gaming, then you need to act. Privacy is important, but if you suspect your child is in danger then you should check your child’s computer. Look at files, emails, etc. to see if there is anything inappropriate. Secondly, perhaps most important, talk with your child. Even if nothing is going on, use the opportunity to explain the potential dangers and how to avoid becoming the victim of technology-assisted
