The box is the only thing that they have left from the original part on the Lottery. They do not want to get rid of the box although throughout the year no one in the village wants to keep the box at their home . Each year they always need to find a new place to keep the box, sometimes they keep it in the old store sitting on a shelf. Leaving it here it does not bother anyone, and they all agree to leaving it there. This box is so important to everyone, although the villagers appear to be scared of keeping it. It symbolizes equality amongst everyone within the village. The little white papers are what the people draw out of the black box. All of the papers are the same size and are all folded the same size. Because of these precautions there is not any room for questions, such as it is unfair that they are folded in a different way than a paper that someone else could have pulled. On one of the many little white papers there is a black dot in the center placed there with a piece of coal. The mark is just rubbed onto the paper so once again you cannot tell because it does not change the size of the paper or give the appearance of having the mark until the paper is opened
