Symbolism is used many times throughout literature but many people are using symbolism incorrectly. They are expecting it to only hold one meaning, well they're wrong.
Set in California near the Salinas River during The Great Depression, the novel begins when two grown men come looking in search of new jobs on a ranch. In Thomas C. Foster uses 3 key aspects to find out what a symbol might mean; he first states these three examples, “We have to use a variety of tools on it: questions, experience, preexisting knowledge” (107). These key aspects can give an idea of what the symbol truly means. Foster uses caves to articulate symbolism through someone's experience being in the caves, through knowing the history or through questions. Foster describes from a novel, a Passage To India by E.M. Forster, a central incident of a possible assault in a cave as an experience. The story uses the main characters Adela quested, Miss Moore (Adela's to be mother in law)and Dr.Aziz an educated Indian physician. On an outing with Dr.Aziz both Adela and miss Moore had a very nasty experience in the caves with sudden feeling of oppressively crowded and physically threatened by the others who have joined her. The overly hostile and dark enclosure made her feel that something unidentified and unpleasant rubs across her mouth. Her heartbeat rises up and she cannot breathe, so she flees the cave as quickly as she can to take a good while to calm down. Whereas in Adela's
