I believe that one of my most valuable personal strengths as a professional social worker is having the ability to validate an individual’s feelings. I try my hardest to take a step back and really look at a person’s life and feelings and try to understand where they are coming from, and what they need. Having an empathic nature will help me in the field of social work. Especially aspiring to become a LCSW, I will need to be able to validate my client’s feelings and goals that they have about themselves. Validation is one of the only ways that we communicate acceptance of ourselves and others. Validation of feelings is a foundation to a helping relationship. Another strength that I believe that I would positively bring to my social work practice is my ability to be present and to reflectively …show more content…
The accredited social work program I am in currently has equipped me with a generalist knowledge of the social work profession. I use the skills and tolls that we have learned in the program in my internship on a daily basis. However, sometimes I have a hard time speaking up and using them as effectively as I know that I can. I don’t want to mess up and say the wrong thing, so I find myself not saying anything and just going along with what the clinician at the time says. Not to say their technique is ineffective, I just may have a different outlook on the situation. I speak about this to my supervisor during my supervision regularly. She can see again through my processes recordings that in certain situations that I record I know what the underlining issue is, but I don’t speak up and try to express my feelings and thoughts on the situation in real time. I just write what my reactions are in the processes recording. This is why I need to go on to my Master’s degree in social work to expand my skills and understanding to build my self confidence that I can be an effective

The article “Non-Profit News: Easy Ways to Lose Clients and Your Reputation” written by Dr. Warren Corson III was about how certain things, although they may seem insignificant can affect you and your clients in a negative way. An example would be focusing on making money. When a clinician is only focused on making money their clients may feel as if they are a meal ticket. Immediately asking to have clients pay their co-payment and fill out paperwork before asking the clients why they are there, may cause a negative impact on the clients’ perception of the clinician. Corson stated that smiling, making eye contact, and asking clients why they are there is extremely important.…

I was originally going to tell you to “screw them” but the reality is social workers are also in a culture that doesn’t value input from us as much as we would like. Instead it looks at codes and why people like Paul are depressed and not the situation he is in that could be linked to racism. For me, we need to play by rules of the world to do the most good while hoping that my way of looking…

A quote I like to remind myself of when I feel overwhelmed comes from a personal wellness training session I attended, which states that “it is not selfish to refill your own cup so that you can pour into others. It is not just a luxury, it is essential.” As a social worker, the ability to self-reflect and take care of yourself before taking care of others is a critical skill for competent practice in this…

This leads to another aspect of my professional practice, which is engagement. Even though I may not have a lot of experiences working as a social worker, I can use that to my advantage where I can come in with an open mind to new ideas and even more positive outlook. I find that sometimes social workers or any other helping professionals who have been in the field for a long time tend to stick to the same practices and mindset that can negatively impact clients. For me, I would engage with my clients in open discussions regarding topics like what they are going through, what they like to change, future goals and so forth. By doing this, it helps motivate them to take action in their own life and have a final say without having to rely on a…

According to Zastrow, these eight skills include: engaging clients in a working relationship, identifying the issues, problems needs and resources, collecting information, planning for services, using their communication skills, implementing interventions, apply knowledge, and evaluating the outcomes of everything that they do (2010, p. 67). In my opinion, out of the eight skills, being able to communicate with a client is the most important skill for a social worker to have. A social worker needs to be able to work with different types of people both young and old, and it is important that they can communicate well with them. If they cannot communicate with their client then they won’t be able to determine what their problems are or how to solve them. They need to know how to show their clients empathy and talk to them like they are important.…

Structural social work is concerned with the broad socio-economic and political dimensions of society and the impact of these systems in creating social problems. This approach concerns itself with how the dominant and/or majority group define and constrain the minority, arguing that individual failings arise from specific societal context. Its primary goal, therefore, is to reduce social inequality through the transformation of oppressive structures and the emancipation of those who have been oppressed. However, the structural social work model falls short in inclusivity of minority groups. In order to aid in structural social work’s fight for equality, June Ying Yee introduces anti-racism praxis in her article, “Critical Anti-Racism Praxis:…
