Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a malignant tumor that starts in the lining of your stomach. Seeing as the tumor is malignant, it is possible for the tumor to spread to other areas in your body. Your body is made up of tons of cells and these cells grow, divide and die properly. Cancer begins when these cells begin to grow uncontrollably.

The stomach is one of the main parts in the digestive system. It is located in the upper abdomen in your body. The stomach is in charge of mixing it’s digestive “juices” with the food so that it can be broken down efficiently. The “juices” are created in glands in the lining of the stomach and they which then help break down the food so it is able to pass through the small intestine. This type of cancer starts from the cells that structure the innermost layer, the mucosa. When doctors talk about stomach cancer or gastric cancer, they are almost always referring to adenocarcinoma. Although most of the time it is adenocarcinoma there are many more types of stomach tumors. For example, other types of stomach tumors include, lymphomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (often known as GISTs) and carcinoid tumors are other but less common tumors that can also be found in the stomach. In Canada, the statistics in 2010 were about 1 in 81 males are expected to develop stomach cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 118 will die from it. Additionally, about 1 in 135 females are expected to develop stomach cancer and 1 in 182 will die from it. Stomach cancer is a disease that mostly affects older people. Scientists have found some risks factors that pertain to stomach cancer. To explain, it can depend on gender, age, ethnicity, where a person lives, diet, tobacco use, and family history.
