In all of my life, I been stereotyped or I have stereotyped someone or something we use it almost every day. First of all, what is stereotype and second why do we use it? According to Mahzarin R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald who are Professors of psychology and authors of “On Stereotypes” claim that stereotypes is a form of categorizing, “Once formed, categories are the basis for normal prejudgment. We cannot possibly avoid this process. Orderly living depends on it” (613). In other words, stereotyping is our survival kit without it we would not be able to be civilize or trust each other, and why we use it because like I said is way to survive and besides is how our mind works we categorize or stereotype people and things. He felt that he should apologies for thinking that way of me. I of course, didn’t feel offended but I was curious why he thought that way of me so ask him why. His response was simple because you are Mexican I remember just thinking ‘that’s it’. He later on explain to me that he had bad experience prior and he had the need to apologies for thinking that I was malicious and a big mouth. Then he explain why he thought I was poor it was because of the media he saw throughout his life watching television they occasionally make us the servants of wealthy people. For instance, in all the shows I have watch the Hispanic male is the gardener and the female is the maid. Stereotypes have long been with us; it’s the way we think, it goes back deep into history, its found in every culture, and its how we live life everyday. When you start going beyond the reason that they’re considered who they are, and start saying everyone like them in that way, also acts like them, in other ways; it’s wrong. We not only classify, but relate people to a social class by the way they look, not only does this create assumptions about people it can also lead to things like hostility, ignorance, and hatred, even if it is done subconsciously, many people still act on it and pick it up at a young age. There are two examples that I think well describes stereotyping. Stella Young in her podcast I’m not your inspiration, thank you…

Racial stereotypes hid the oppression of African Americans. “The Sambo stereotype of African American slaves and by extension, of modern African Americans is that American blacks are by nature servile, fawning, cringing, docile, irresponsible, lazy, humble, dependent, prone to lying and stealing, grinningly happy and basically infantile” (Davis, 2007, p. 1). This description appoints to the justification of slavery by calling blacks incapable children that need a master in order to cope with society. By belittling the characters of African Americans it makes it seem like the slave masters are the victims who are just simply lending a hand to what seems like an unconscious animal. While it seems like everyone has adopted one of these traits,…

It could however also be seen by some as a portrayal of the Aryan race which was a particularly prominent ideal at the time due to Nazi Germany's intentions. In fact, the doll that inspired Barbie, Lilli, was created by a German toy company that were known supporters of Hitler. One of the founders of the company actually describes the Lilli, doll in a similar way that those described the Aryan race, from this we can infer that her blonde-haired, blue-eyed appearance was just that. Therefore Barbies appearance can easily be perceived as one that has racist intentions or connotations. Ruth handler, however, was actually well known as somebody who hired people based on their skill set rather than their background, from which we can assume it was not her intention to recreate a doll that…

Today, many people, from other races, with the exception of black people think that everyone receives the same opportunities. This form of thinking is incorrect. Black people do not get the same opportunities as whites. As an example, when a white individual and a black individual apply for the same job with the same company, both have degrees, and equal experience, most often than not, the white individual is offered the position. Many people in society do not understand the struggles that black people as a whole endure every day.…

Several days have passed when we were assigned reflect about cultural stereotypes in this subject. Subsequently, I started contemplating on my personal experiences related to numerous stereotypes in the culture where I belong. Before I start to reflect on those experiences, I felt compelled to start with defining culture and stereotype, and providing several stories on how I experienced being stereotyped as a Filipino particularly in cyberspace. “Culture is the complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of the society” (Tylor, 1871).…
