In the movie Star Trek: The Voyage Home, Dr. McCoy is walking by a woman who is suffering. He asks what's wrong with her and she explains she's on kidney dialysis. McCoy, without breaking a sweat, takes out a pill and give it to her. Moments later, she is being wheeled out, shouting "Doctor gave me a pill, and I grew a new kidney!"

That was one of those futuristic things that happens in Star Trek that you can potentially see happen in the not too distant future. Well, that future is getting closer. Director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Daniela Rus and her team has created a pill that unfolds after you swallow it, can be guided with a tiny magnet inside of it to a foreign object in the body, or it can find

Once the robot is done with its task, it just simply does what food does in the stomach: digests. You don't have to worry about it staying there for the rest of your life or pushing it out and cutting yourself.

The project of this magic pill was funded by a National Science Foundation grant. I can imagine the board members watching the presentation by Rus and immediately jumping on board. How could you not? Plus, Rus says that the components to make the pill are less than $100. This sounds great, but then think about how much it costs to build an iPhone, and then think about how much they cost when you buy them at the store. The medical business in America wants that money.

Now that they have the prototype tested, they now look for approval by the MIT animal care committe to try it out in pigs. Why pigs? If it digests, why not just try it out with a person with something they can treat in their stomach? I know, they have to do this, but it's always fun to see a rogue scientists try that stuff out on themselves, but then you end up getting a supervillain or

In class we discussed the pink pill. I was not even aware that this type of pill existed. I was also surprised to learn that this pill is not like Viagra. Viagra is a pill used by men that has to do with the physical body whereas the pink pill affects a woman’s sex drive, which is a cognitive issue. I continued my research of the pink pill and found that the FDA put a number of restrictions on the usage of this pill.…

It’s an all around magnanimous hearted movie and fun for all ages. Now for my reasoning. Shrek is a beautiful work of art, the animation is smooth and good.…

Its purpose was to detect cosmic rays while in orbit; unfortunately the satellite failed to ignite on its fourth stage in its launch process and never made it to orbit. During the time of Explorer 2, the Soviets were also at work with Luna 2, this probe became the first to hit the moon but after 33.5 hours into flight the signals were dead. The US then created another satellite, the fourth satellite by America, and the first satellite to be solar-powered. They created the Vanguard 1, the first part of the Vanguard Project. Although communication with the satellite was lost in 1964, it remains the oldest artificial satellite still orbiting the Earth and the oldest piece of debris orbiting Earth.…

Are you surprised by anything that is said on the website? Why do you think many people are so quick to believe reported statistics? While on the website and reading the article, few things stood out to me. Imagine having the choice of life or death left in your hands alone. On one end, there is a rat, who is energetically running to find a hiding spot from the broom sweeping across the floor. On the other end, there is a stay-at-home mom, jumped up on the table, violently stabbing at the rat in attempts to scare it away from her. One of them will die. Most people would choose to save the stay-at-home mother with three children and not have a guilty thought cross their mind.…

What began as a simple childlike fascination with space and aviation when I watched my first episode of Star Trek as a young girl, has followed me through the years, subtly influencing my choices throughout my studies. To me, the engineers in that series were the true heroes; no matter what happened, they were always able to draw out a “little more power” or come up with the creative work-around (albeit at the last second) that allowed the crew to collectively maneuver themselves out of whatever tight spot they were in and achieve their mission goal. I became enthralled with the idea of pushing technology, and the human body, to its limits, and soon found myself enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania as a bioengineering major and center of their women’s basketball team. While I was fortunate enough to receive many personal accolades during my time at UPenn, the two that are most important to me are winning the Ivy League Championship and being named a Sports Ilustrated on Campus Glue Gal - an award given to a handful of people across the country who "do all the little things" and…

When it comes to the topic of animal testing, most of us will readily agree that it is a very debatable discussion. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question whether it helps researchers to find new drugs and treatments suitable for humans. Whereas some are convinced that animal testing does help researchers find new effective drugs and treatments, others maintain that some drugs tested on animals are ineffective or even safe for human consumption. In my perspective the results of animal testing are unreliable, because animals and humans are not genetically or anatomically alike.…

Throughout the years, many social groups have created activist campaigns to help improve human rights laws as well as to raise money for various charities and causes. Yet, help often comes from unlikely allies. Indeed, one can think of the Star Trek fandom who was one of the first fan groups to support social causes; indeed, Spock and Kirk shippers and other Star Trek fans made fundraisers for AIDS research and campaigned for gay rights (Jenkins & Shresthova, 2012, para. 1.7). Nowadays, this practice is referred to as fan activism (Jenkins & Shresthova, 2012, para. 1.7) With this in mind, the following essay will examine the connection between a celebrity, Emma Watson, and her fans as well as the way they practice activism.…
