Jude. The research helps them to have a better understanding of the “molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children” (St. Jude Facts). It is because of their research that there was such a great increase in the survival rate for children with cancer. St. Jude continues to research until no child has to die. Some of their research includes: gene therapy, bone-marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, biochemistry, radiation, and blood diseases (Cancer Center Facts). Other research projects include resistance to therapy, viruses, hereditary diseases, influenza, pediatric AIDS, and the psychological effects of fatal illnesses (St. Jude Facts). St. Jude is also very concerned with the long-term effects that treatment has on its patients. According to St. Jude Cancer Center Program, “curative therapies for children with cancer, while minimizing long-term side effects”. In 1996, a scientist at St. Jude, named Dr. Peter Doherty, was awarded the Nobel Prize for his breakthroughs in cancer research (St. Jude Children’s). There are many other doctors that have made great strides in the treatment and cure of cancer.
It takes an enormous amount of money to operate a hospital. Costs range from daily operations to maintenance (Unique). St. Jude takes on additional costs since they cover all the costs to families that insurance does not cover; as well as, all the costs for families without insurance. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is more than just a hospital; it is a place of hope for children and families everywhere ("7 Amazing Truths" 2015). It is a place that does its best to make people feel at home. Dealing with a life threatening illnesses or diseases is not a pleasant experience. All the staff does what they can to make the children and their families smile; because even though their smile might not last that long, it will take their mind off of their burdens for a while. St. Jude is truly a saint for many children and their families; however, these services would not be possible without the help of others and their generous donations.
