“Social Media is changing the way we communicate and the way we are perceived, both positively and negatively. Every time you post a photo, or change your status, you are contributing to your own digital footprint and personal brand” (Amy Jo Martin). Today in the 21st century, social media has changed dramatically by making it easier for people to not have the normal face to face interactions. Social media has had an effect on Generation Y students in the workplace and in a normal every day conversation. It has become a cloud over young professional’s heads making it harder for them to have a proficient conversation with either their boss or professor. Niekerk explains in this article that, “Social media is an integral part of the Web’s evolution; it has become a nearly ubiquitous technology that can be accessed from traditional desktop computers and many mobile devices” (Niekerk, Maharaj 1). Most businesses who try and restrict their employees from using a lot networking devices while they are working are eliminating the process to make their business grow. The companies that want to restrict their employees from using networking websites are afraid of what one of their employees can say about the company; they can’t control what an employee says about the company but they can definitely limit what networking websites they do use. These ideas many people come up with are by using the internet and gathering more information than what they already have. The reason company’s try and restrict employees from going on the internet a lot is because they think their employees will get easily distracted and in some cases that does happen, but social media also makes it harder for people to have any face-to-face conversation. Social media and any other websites that let people communicate with each other through make it easier for them to ignore people who are sitting right in front of them to “talk” to someone on a social media website or over text
