Essay On Social Location

Have you ever thought about the factors that have shaped you into the person you are today? There are many factors that help develop an individual, such as age, gender, class, education, etc. Those factors are called social location. Social location is where a person fits into society based on his or her own life experiences. I believe that gender, racial background, and social class has had a huge impact on my life and determining my social location. As a female, I believe that there are many stereotypes about women that aren’t necessarily true. Gender has had the greatest impact on my life. Growing up I always heard, ‘women are supposed to be stay at home mothers’, ‘a woman’s main priority in life is to get married’, and ‘women don’t like hard work’. I don’t fit that mold. I am a single college sophomore, perusing a Criminal Justice degree. When I graduate I would love to work with the Drug Enforcement Administration being a special agent investigating drug crimes. Personally, the three main contributors to my social location are race, social class, and being a female because these three experiences have shaped my ideas and beliefs towards society. Because of my social class, I have had the amazing opportunity to attend Harding University where I am seeking a higher education. Another factor is racial background. Race has had both negative and positive effects on my social location. It has taught me to not just go with the crowd and to be my own person. Last, being a female has had a huge impact on the way I view society. It has made me realize that I do not have to be what other people want or expect me to be. I believe, based on experiences, everyone views society in a different way. Therefore, no one can have the exact same social
