Essay On Social Justice

In a time where the United States is run by a racist and misogynist, social justice has taken a turn to extremism - but is anybody listening to them?
Social justice has mutated into a weird form of screaming and arguing your beliefs into the void, but it isn’t helping anybody. What was once an important tool for changing minds and laws has become overkill and is often having the opposite effect. People involved in today’s social justice attack rather than educate. They are never going to change minds and ideals if they yell at others with opposing beliefs. It simply makes the opposing side hate social justice beliefs. The simple fact is, nobody likes to be called a racist, even if they are one.
I love that we are more open about calling out bigotry in our society. It’s a good thing to show the next generation that we do not tolerate or excuse such behavior. However, when it comes to changing problematic mindsets, we need to approach it in a

The study consisted of asking leading questions to people in order to have them think in a different light. For example, they asked questions such as “Why do you sympathize with the feelings of some men that women are better kept barefoot and pregnant?” to women who said they supported traditional gender roles. The women wound up changing their beliefs, even if slightly, from when they started the study (Swann, et al. 1988,ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Retrieved Oct. 28, 2017).
If the new social justice movement truly wanted to change people’s perspectives on issues, they wouldn’t yell mindlessly at each other. They would be more resourceful and less chauvinistic. We must rise above the ones who yell mindlessly at us and counter their mindlessness with maturity. As my favorite Michelle Obama quote says, “when they go low, we go high.” For social justice, this is the time to go

In The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander, which delves into the issue of racism in America or how she describes it as the “racial caste system”; there seems to be a distinct amount of similarities between present time and the past. Americans tend to want to believe that times have changes and they have all progress and done better. Though in some instances that might be true, in reality Americans are simply making excuses in order to rationalize their bias towards not only blacks but minorities as well. I do believe that there is a “New Jim Crow” in America but we seem to be ignoring the topic because it makes us uncomfortable. I believe that we want to think that we have learned from our past…

I’ve always seen myself as a realist. I try to plainly say things as I see them with as little bias as possible. Alongside that I have also given my best effort to try and see things from other perspectives. There is always another way to look at life and all of its bits and pieces and I love challenging myself to do so. Frankly however, it is far from easy.…

I have a strange infatuation with diseases. I love to see diseases, analyze them, understand the symptoms that define them, but most importantly, discover if and how the ailment can be cured. One disease that has recently become a focus in my life, is one I have personally entitled African American Dystrophy; a disorder characterized by the weakening, degeneration, or abnormal development of a people. It is a disease that has been metastasizing this country since I was young. Spreading rapidly, appearing benign in its beginning stages, but soon growing malignant with increased inattention and neglect.…

Personal Agenda Creates Political Standpoints An infamous lyric in national anthem of the United States of America by Francis Scott Key, “The Star-Spangled Banner” goes, “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” As an American citizen, it is a privilege as well as a responsibility to contribute to the political aspect of the nation because everyone is granted freedom. As one is allowed freedom, making decisions are part of the duty of an American. Decisions we make everyday are based on our own values and ideas, so it will come as no surprise that many people’s political views are influenced by one’s personal opinion as well.…

Since its emergence in 2013, the Black Lives Matter activist movement has been critiqued, analyzed and challenged from multiple angles. Specifically, the ways in which it defies previous black civil rights movements, the usage of social media and digital forms of activism from its members, accusations of disregarding other marginalized groups and lack of a centralized focus. Each of these critiques are worthy of greater analysis because of the opportunities to better understand how activism looks in a modern setting, coupled with identifying and keeping at the forefront, issues that continue to impact people of color. While these criticisms interest me, my primary focus for engaging with Black Lives Matter for this project lie in assessing…

Racism has been an ongoing issue for centuries. In 1890 Jim Crow laws were created to keep African Americans and Whites separate, but “equal”. This stripped them from any and every public classroom, bathroom, theater and even water fountain. In the tempestuous decade and a half that followed, civil rights activists spoke up in hope of bringing about change; Martin Luther King was the leading voice for these activists. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,” (Martin Luther King).…

Race Relations in the United States has been a volatile subject dating back as far as we know and can read in history. The United States and its citizens have long created plans to tackle these conflicts that arise from race relations, yet they seem nothing more than good simple ideas that have grown into forced approaches on society. Ideas that have changed and evolved over time to be only a sliver of the original tone and plan to begin with. If one doesn’t follow these opinions, you could be seen as racist or impeding progress. It brings about the question, are we any better off with these approaches being presented to citizens of the country.…

In my opinion there needs to be an ongoing conversation on racial prejudice and why it exists. Civil rights leaders in the past fought to abolish discrimination and called on local Government to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1957; at that time, it was to protect civil rights of African Americans; and later adopted voter’s rights. The enforcement of the laws depended on the cooperation of federal judges and as you can imagine many judges favored segregation and their strategy was to remove or circumvent the local Government. Needless to say we are right back in the same predicament in the 21st century. In my opinion until local and state government make a commitment to the cause of civil rights and “prosecute individuals” that deny people their…

Let’s talk about equality. When I use the word “Equality” I am not talking about freedom of speech or religion; I am referring to how people in America are treated when it comes to justifying justice in many situations. It is quite ignorant of us to continuously change something a group of people with similarities united together to create. A bond that should not be broken or altered to make our own. That is what we have done with the Black Lives Matter movement.…

As time progresses, and we grow up in this world; the way people treat each other shows how harsh we can be. The way we react in certain situations or judgement to others is something that is learned not just inherited. We chose to speak on the topic of sexism, racism, and gay rights because we want to help those people have a voice. A voice from someone outside of themselves, who wants equality just as they do. Most of these people feel oppressed and are scared to speak out for themselves even though our ancestors have been fighting for equality for generations.…

This semester, I went to Black Lives Matter by Patrisse Cullors, during MLK week. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this presentation. Racism is a hot topic and can be discussed in many different constructs. There were few white people there, and a majority of the people there where African American. I felt that the target audience that Cullors needed to impact was sadly not there.…
