During my testimony I became overwhelmed with emotions as I observed her to cling on to her caregiver whom she would not even allow to touch her only months before. There were no more feces, there were no more night terrors, and there were no more daily emotional and behavioral outbursts; now there was just love and acceptance. This was that one client that would either make or break me; it was in that moment that I knew that I was in the wrong career. I applied that day to begin my journey to become a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Her story helps to tell the tale of overcoming obstacles and the desire for a better life. As social workers, we can learn from this memoir to see our clients as a whole and help them to identify their own personal strengths. Focusing on past mistakes or problems only helps to clarify and bring light to the “exceptions of the problem” and what is going right in our client’s life. I think that this memoir shows what true resiliency is and should continue to be shared in the social work profession to better enhance our own skills when working with…

After a long year, I finally was back at La Semana, a week long adoption camp for kids from Latin American countries. After the joyous reunion hugs and hellos, I headed off to my classroom that I would be helping in. Glancing out the window I instantly knew that it was one of those picture perfect days. The sun already shining, and a cool breeze just strong enough to lightly brush through my hair. Back in the classroom however, the temperature was not so pleasant.…

David told everyone who asked, lies about what had happened, because at first he still hoped to see the good in mother, and that it would all change. However, it changed to the fear that he never knew what mother would do if he told the truth, but the person abusing you should not make it your fault. It is never the victim's fault because no matter what you could do, it is never an excuse for you to have to go through any type of abuse, physical or mental, but for as long as they allow it to happen, it will only get worse. If there is one major thing David’s story taught me, is that we need to be like the nurse at his school, someone that a victim knows they can trust and talk to you about, knowing they will not be judged.…
