The slaves had to undergo the Middle Passage, which was the trip to the New World. It was a long and treacherous voyage for a slave. More than ten million slaves were brought to the Americas from 1500-1800. The slaves on the ship would die of different things like disease, starvation, or their own dispair. They had to endure a lot of pain in the process of giving birth. Sojourner Truth, for example, had thirteen children. Each of them were bought from her current owner. She never saw them again, which I could imagine to be very painful. Slaves who were sick and weary were often killed or left to die.These hardworking people worked long hours for very little pay, as they were owned by the slave owner. They worked from sunup to sundown. They barely got any edible food.
Some slaves lived in tiny shacks with dirt floors. They also didn’t have a lot of furniture.
Domestic slaves worked in plantation homes. They lived a better lifestyle under better conditions. They had better homes, and they enjoyed more nutritious food. They were isolated from plantation slaves. Sometimes, they even got to travel with their owner and their owner’s family. This gave them a better reputation. If or when they had children, they could arrange courtships for them with other domestic slaves. A negative factor of being a slave was that you could not keep a gun to protect yourself. If they were found to be armed, they would face severe consequences such as getting whipped as
