Governor Monroe was given the list of participants, including the names of the Frenchmen. (Egerton, pg 209) Governor Monroe kept the involvement of the Frenchmen secret from the public and also from Jefferson. The Federalists knew of the Frenchmen’s existence, but didn’t have their names. They wanted to use this in their campaign to discredit Jefferson to prove their point that he supported the French Revolution. By the time the Frenchmen’s names were revealed, it was too late to have a political impact on the elections. (Egerton pg 210) The Federalists blamed the Democratic-Republicans for giving the blacks the idea of freedom. On December 18,1800,The Norfolk Herald printed, “Liberty and Equality has been infused in the minds of our negroes. Nat Turner was born on October 2, 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia.3,7. From a young age, Nat had visions and prophecies. 3,4,7 His mother and other adults around him proclaimed that he would be a prophet and that he “was intended for some great purpose.” (Gray,pg 7) He was extremely intelligent and learned to read on his own. (Gray pg 8) Turner had a vision in 1825 where he saw ‘white spirits and black spirits engaged in battle and the sun was darkened.”( Gray, pg 10) He heard a voice and felt he was to “slay my enemies with their own weapons”
