Essay On Shadowing

While at Rutgers I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on living systems from the level of a single molecule to an entire organism. I have been able to do this both in the classroom and while shadowing a physician. While these two types of learning are very different, they both are vital aspects of having a holistic education in the biological sciences. Through my major in Cell Biology and Neuroscience, I have also been able to build on my biology foundation by delving more deeply into neuroscience, the facet of the life sciences that most interests me. I also have had hands-on experience working at the cellular level in my laboratory and have developed a comfort with the material allowing me to explain it to others. I have demonstrated the ability to apply this knowledge a multitude of times. One instance in my life, that was very terrifying, in which I applied knowledge gained through my time …show more content…
I was playing in a soccer game when I was pulled out and alerted that my mother had been rushed to the hospital, upon being told the symptoms she displayed, slurred speech, drooping of the face, and difficulty walking, I immediately recognized that she had a restriction of blood flow to her brain. But once I had heard that she came out of her symptoms relatively quickly with no lasting damage I suspected that it was a transient ischemic attack, and the doctor confirmed that that was indeed what happened. While I was mortified at what could have happened to my mother, this instance served as a time when I could apply my knowledge of living systems to a real occurrence. Another instance in which I demonstrated skill in this area is during my time doing research. Recently

The experiences in the Biology 230 course will certainly continue to influence me in my understand of and how I approach topics in following biology and science courses. The reason why I say this is that the process that information is taught in the lecture course was a bit different from how some other courses would normally be taught. Comparing this course to previously biology and chemistry courses, this course focuses on the why rather than what is the answer. This certainly helps as it makes up need to find a connection to why some is the way it is, which benefits many of the different topics that are taught through the course.…

The classes observed included Government, Informational Technology (IT), band, lunch, and a free period during which Sarah worked in the office. The high school in which I observed showed its age, there was a very warm feel to the building. In Search of My Family’s and My Garden In her piece “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens” Alice Walker discusses how black women in America during the period of slavery were miraculously able to get lost in their own forms of art. These women did not have a room of their own or money, as Virginia Wolfe deems necessary for the creation of art. Black women at the time did not even own themselves. Through stories of Walker’s mother, Walker comes to realize that her mother who worked on the fields all-day and tended to the family before and after work actually was an artist. She points out that her mother was “radiant, almost to the point of being invisible” when she was working in her garden (241).…

If I was caring for Tom, I would call the doctor to inform him or her that I will not administer blood to Tom, just as Eliese did, because he expressed clearly he does not want to receive the blood. Although, it would be difficult, as the patients advocate I believe we must respect their wishes and beliefs. The only way his family member’s wishes would outweigh Tom’s, the patient’s, wishes was if he was mentally unstable, but that wasn’t the case during this scenario. No matter what beliefs we might have, I think we should end up respecting and listening to the patient’s beliefs. 2.…

Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), also referred to as a “stroke” is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when there is diminished blood flow being delivered to the brain. The two major types of strokes are ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke occurs when there is an obstruction in the brain caused by a blood clot and a hemorrhagic stroke results in sudden bleeding in the brain when a blood vessel ruptures. National Institute of Neurological Disorders [NIND] (2011) reports that nearly 80 percent of strokes account for ischemic and 20 percent account for hemorrhagic strokes. Although strokes can occur differently, stroke survivors tend to share sudden common characteristics depending on the location of the stroke in the brain.…

Background I received my undergraduate degree in Integrative Studies. Many of the courses that I took stressed the importance of experiential learning. Some of the most memorable lessons of my undergraduate course work came from my integrative studies degree, whether it was watching a supreme court case for Argumentation and Advocacy or visiting a Polyface farm for a general education science credit. These experiences taught me that when you enjoy what you are learning the learning is so much more concrete.…
