I know you are, but what am I? A person’s sexual orientation or who they are sexually attracted to is not necessarily obvious. There are gays who look straight, and straights who look gay and whom even knows what a bisexual should look like? Humans have a tendency to label and categorizes. Heterosexuals are sexually attracted to the opposite sex, Homosexuals to the same sex, and Bisexuals to both sexes. These are just a few of the terminologies used to describe sexual orientation. In these three categories the biological sex of the person we are attracted to determines our sexual orientation. Although, our sexual orientation does not necessarily reflect who we are having sex with, the act of having sex is sexual behavior not sexual orientation.

She is still a homosexual. If a heterosexual female has sex with someone of the same sex this does not make her a homosexual. She is just a heterosexual having a homosexual experience. She is still a heterosexual. If a bisexual is in a monogamous relationship with a female this does not make her a homosexual. It does not change the fact that she also is sexually attracted to the opposite sex. Sexual orientation exists separately form sexual behavior. This becomes evident with virgins. A person’s sexual experience does not determine their sexual orientation. It is their sexual attractions that determine their sexual orientation. If you were a non-heterosexual teacher or coach you ran the risk of someone finding out about your sexual orientation which could and probably would lead to losing your job, your house, and possibly any future job in the field. With the recent progression of equality in the majority of the US this reality is greatly reduced. Today there are some teachers and coaches who are openly homosexual, or bisexual. The reduced risk of discrimination may allow me someday to feel more comfortable expressing myself openly and honestly. As an educator I want people to say because of you I did not give
