“It 's said we 're freaks. That we have control over our own choices. But, truly, if they were to walk a mile in our shoes, they 'd know the truth.” Cody, a 15-year-old boy who would like to remain anonymous, recently came to terms with his sexuality, but it was with a heavy heart that he did so. In his story, he talks about the constant heartache he used to receive and occasionally still receives while he fights his own thoughts on whether or not he will ultimately make the decision to accept his sexual preferences. Cody addresses the fact that it’s like his mind and his heart are constantly at battle. There are two sides to how he feels. One side knows deep down who it is he truly wants to be, and that side wants nothing more than to embrace it. And on the other side, he is continuously denying the fact that he is homosexual (“It’s Like a War”).

The question on whether or not there is a gay gene or if homosexuals are born the way that they are has been a controversial subject throughout the U.S. for the past 30+ years (Burr). What’s more difficult, friends and family finding out about another member’s sexual tendencies or realizing it themselves? A question often asked is “Why?”. Why would someone

The animals in this study have gone to show that they are only interested in other male animals. Sexual orientation has been a heavily disputed topic for decades. At first no one really cared, but the more it was put out there the more it became evident that this couldn’t be ignored. It wasn’t until June 26, 2013 that gay marriage accepted in all fifty states. It is gradually becoming more widely accepted, but there are still large groups out there that do not support it. In Sager’s article Refuting Anti-Gay Rights Arguments, we see that he has a much stronger source because he comes back with textual evidence, while Dawson’s article Bisexuality is a real Thing, is much weaker because it is based off her opinion.…

In an attempt to form our own moral judgements and beliefs, we must ask ourselves, are there any good reasons to think homosexual sex is wrong? And if so, is this because it is unnatural? And would it be wrong if it were unnatural? To answer these questions, we must look at some of the major arguments made against homosexual sex.…

“Boys will be boys” my mom said nonchalantly as I told her what had occurred in my last class period of the day. It baffled me how a teenage boy being mocked for his sexuality could be so trivial in her eyes. I didn’t understand how the struggle for gay rights was any different from black rights or feminism. To me we were all united, brought together by our interminable fight for equality and acceptance. As an amiable and peaceful introvert I find it difficult to stand up for what I believe is right.…

Psycho-social explanations suggest a mixture of reasons that could add to the growth of a person's homosexuality. For example, a female-dominated upbringing in a gay man's past, due to the absence of a father figure in his life. Others think that adherence or deviance from agreement to gender roles and one's own psychological makeup. With that being said none of these aspects fully answers the question "what causes homosexuality?" Considerable amounts of the brain develop during childhood. While you are learning new things such as why the adults around you believe you should feel about things and what they believe is normal behavior.…

In the reading, Capitalism and Gay Identity, D’Emilio challenges the idea that gay men and lesbians have not always existed, but emerged because of free labor created by capitalists. However, in my opinion towards the emergence of homosexuality, I disagree with D’Emilio’s concept that homosexuality results from a specific time period when capitalism arose, and I would argue that although attractions among same genders appeared uncommon prior to the twentieth century, homosexuality has established long before the development of capitalism. In other words, I believe same-gender attractions develop inherently instead of socially (D’Emilio, 1983, 100).…

Less obviously, the idea that sexuality is more a product of biology is problematic because there could still be intervention using misguided medicine (Sedgwick 43). Overall, I believe that people should not see being homosexual as a problem so that the origin of sexuality is not explored in an effort to “fix someone”. Nature versus nurture is not a stable argument because it can harm people, often without their full…
