Good afternoon, this is Jacqueline Parker. I am in your Comparative World Religions class Mondays at 6:45 pm. I just returned from my service trip to Dallas with the Elks Nation Foundation and will be returning to class next Monday, January 23rd.
This service trip was one of the best experiences and opportunities I have ever taken part in. Our mission for the week was to serve with an organization based out of Dallas called City Square. The organization offers 17 different programs to low-income or homeless individuals around Dallas. They provide housing, food, clothing, education, and job/finical counseling to anyone who in below the poverty line. City Squares one mission was to “fight the causes and effects of poverty through service, advocacy, and friendship.” By sharing in community activities and practicing empathy with those who surrounded us the week made for a very humbling experience.

However, even though it feels good it’s still a struggle. Throughout the week my heart was torn. I went to the service sights every day and heard the saddest stories from veterans, children, and parents. When hearing these stories, I would realize that most of these people were just like me and still are. They are just going through a rough stage in our life but society has put this negative label on these individuals called “homeless.” Also, much of society thinks “homeless” people are lazy, incompetent, and list goes on. However, the word homeless defines a person and I, among the City Square staff, don’t think that’s what these people are, so instead we called them our neighbors. Throughout the week, we worked on removing that stigma and trying to understanding that these people are just like
