At the beginning of the semester, I honestly believed that this class would be a waste of time. I didn’t understand why colleges would have a class about service learning. What was service learning? My first day in class was eye opening to say the least. Service learning is a class that connects community service and academic study together to strengthen the students' sense of personal value and responsibility.

Our service learning project focused on spreading awareness about distracted driving. We dedicated ourselves to inform others about the dangers of driving while distracted. We wanted people to realize that it only takes a few seconds of distraction to end a person's life. Although there are plenty of ways to become distracted while driving, my class chose three distractions most common with our age group. Those three distractions are texting, intoxication, and the newest distraction snapchat. We split into three groups and each group gathered facts about their distraction.

The most common distraction among young adults is texting while driving. There were about 11.3 million crashes in 2011 that were caused by someone texting while driving. Being intoxicated while driving is the second most common distraction. In 2011, 9,878 people were in car accidents that involved intoxicated drivers. Snapchat is an addicting app in which people

One way we brought awareness was a panel discussion that included a policeman, a firefighter, and a lawyer. The most memorable thing we did was spread awareness at our school's basketball game. We wore t-shirts that said, " Whiteout Distracted Driving" and at halftime one person from each group presented facts about texting, being intoxicated, and snapchatting while driving. Then at our tri-fold presentation, we had pledge certificates in which people vowed to never drive while
