SCC’s Service Learning Program combines academic course work with community engagement. The program allows students to volunteer in the community outside of the classroom in nonprofit organizations that are underfunded and understaffed.

Bryonie Carter is the Faculty Coordinator for the Service Learning Program and is heading into her 4th year in the program. Professor Carter advertises to faculty and students upcoming events for the program, recruits new faculty for Service Learning classes, helps get resources to faculty for successful classes, holds orientation at the beginning of each semester informing students of how the program works, and makes sure the program runs smoothly in all aspects.

“The most important part of Service Learning is that the community service aspect should intersect with course work,” Carter says. For example, her English 101 class is using a textbook called Writing Communities. The focus of the class is coming together to understand and support the community. Students picked from a list of five agencies to volunteer at and will share their experiences back in the classroom.

There are many different types of Service Learning projects. According to Professor Carter, students

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

Jane Addams: I cannot trace the trail back to the day I wanted to start doing service-learning. I have always been involved in my community and doing different activities for organizations. I know that while I was growing up I was a part of many different service projects. One thing my family always did was bag up our old clothes and donate them every couple of months and I would always raid our cabinets for food drives. One of my favorite things to do as a child was to pick out a few different children during the Christmas season to give toys too.…

As a first year I found myself being one of the youngest if not the youngest one in ASAM 230. Although most of the students in ASAM 230 were seniors, this course would be most helpful to students in their second or third year of college. The assignments we are asked to read, write and discuss in class are directed to help students recognize their interests. For example, reading about Community-Based organizations and becoming more knowledgeable on how they are coordinated can be essential to a student who is still trying to decipher what they want to do with their college career. Most importantly the paper, What Matters to Me and Why?, is the epitome of ASAM 230 as we are able to connect our experiences in service learning and are able to apply…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…
