Another reason sea lampreys affect the Great Lakes food chain is because 40 to 60 percent mortality rate for fish attached by sea lampreys. The last reasons sea lampreys affect the Great Lakes food chain is in 1940s and 1950s, sea lamprey population became excessive in the Great Lakes, which contributed significantly to the collapse of fish species that ere an economic mainstay of a vibrant Great Lakes fishery. Another reason sea lampreys kill so many fish is that they they will stay on a fish for hours, days, or weeks. The last reason that sea lampreys are killing so many fish is that they need food to survive so if they stick to big fish the population would go down as much because big fish are more likely to survive a sea lamprey attack.
