Did you know that a mass shooting occurs every 200 days on average? Just in seven weeks of 2018 there have been eight US school shootings. Guns and other forms of violence have continued to haunt our nation’s schools. Many efforts have begun to provide better security for students. Some measures that can be taken to ensure the safety of our schools are by providing extra security, monitoring and being aware of who comes in and out of schools, and ensuring that schools are prepared and have well thought out plans in case of an attack. One way to guarantee the safety of our schools is by providing extra security. There aren’t many School Resource Officers (SROs) protecting our schools, but I believe if we increase the amount of officers in our schools then it will provide better protection. Another way to provide extra security is by placing metal detectors by each door inside the school. Each student in a school should be given a student ID card and a student number. I believe that staff members should have a way to check student ID’s as the students walk into school. This measure could work because it will ensure who each student is and it will make it easier to find an intruder. For example, Massaponax High School does not check for student ID’s which can make it easier for an intruder to come in and blend with students. Another way to monitor who comes in and out of schools is by ensuring that all doors are locked and can only be opened by staff members with keys. This measure could also work because it would ensure that only staff members can control who can enter and exit the building.
