Role Clarification Role clarification involves team members recognizing and understanding their own and others’ roles and responsibilities, and using this knowledge to achieve goals. In a health care context these goals would be patient/client/, family, or community goals, while in a non-health care setting, these goals can be an organization’s or company’s goals. Moreover, this domain calls on team members to respect and recognize each other’s roles in relation to their own, communicate roles, responsibilities, and attitudes in an appropriate language, as well as carry out their roles in culturally respectful ways. The bedmakers performed adequately in this domain and thus deserve a score of seven. The team consisted of six to eight house workers each day, with an additional supervisor and secondary supervisor. Each house worker understood his/her role and responsibilities in relation to the overall team and for each work day, as well as his/her role in relation to the supervisor’s role. It was understood that questions and concerns were to be addressed by the supervisor and the secondary supervisor when necessary. A team can be viewed as a group of people working towards the same goal or purpose (U.S. Office of Personnel Management, n.d.); thus the bedmakers are part of the broader Residence Services team. Often, members of the bedmakers did not understand the functions of department coordinators and managers. Therefore, while team members were successful in collaborating with their smaller day-to-day team, role clarification of broader team members could be improved through meetings and events. Formal introductions at the beginning of the summer or informal meetings throughout the work period could allow for enhanced role
