This movie is not about heroes, just people going to war with what they have left against a seemingly unstoppable enemy. The Rebellion is on its last breath, still fighting because they do not know what else to do, arguing among themselves and there’s no trust for one another. This movie is about what happened between the fourth and fifth movie- this is what was happening behind the scenes and is about the rebels basically doing whatever it took, even if that meant becoming just as bad as the enemy they were battling against.
In a way, the movie is not a happy movie but it’s no less powerful because of it. As much as I love Star Wars, it always felt like a fairytale to me. Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is the Empire’s representative of the movie, and the one who faces off against Jyn during the end scene, but he does not have loads more screen time than Vader or another iconic Star Wars bad guys who shows up. That’s because this is not that kind of movie. It’s is not about a good guy and a bad guy battling each other for the control/freedom of the realm. It is about two opposing ideologies, and what those groups of individuals are willing to sacrifice for their ideologies. Even though Ben Mendelsohn’s acting cannot be faulted and whether he is striking fear to Galen or covering in fear for Vader, he increases the value of every scene he appears
