In America, there are many differences between people. One of the big differences is how they were raised. Many children receive pats on their heads and trophies for everything they do. Others only receive recognition for hard work and success. Rewarding children can be both great and detrimental given the circumstances. However, in the United States children are rewarded too much. Many parents believe that they should teach their children that they can be anything they want to be. They also tell them they are the best at whatever it is they may do. According to one study 85% of parents admitted to telling their children they are smart or how great they are every chance they got (Bronson, 2009, pp. 6-7) This is simply not true. There should never be a time where in a game no score is kept if the children are playing on an organized team in a league or through the school. When no scores are kept in games, children do not experience the feeling of their hard work paying off with a victory. They also do not learn how to cope with not always winning or getting what they want. By keeping score and having a winner and loser, children can learn how to have fun in the game and they learn that hard work is the key to success. They also learn that they will not always succeed.
