The important social factors that lead to the growth of recreation and leisure are the following: An increase in gross national product and household income plays an important role in recreational growth. According to Kraus, over $500 billion was spent on recreation in late 1990’s. Since there is an increase in earnings, it is expected to see an increase in spending by a family that is earning more due economic growth of the nation. There’s more disposable income which a family can spend on recreational activities. On the other hand, the downfall of nation’s economy had led to high unemployment rate. As a student, it is hard to work full time and go to school. Therefore, there’s not enough money to engage in recreational activities that costs money. Another factor is the industrial cities and the employers that are located in those cities. People were moving to cities because the cities promoted recreation and leisure time and it was beneficial for the employers in terms of recruiting. I agree with the idea of people who work hard, but they are not thinking of work all the time except workaholic people. Workaholic’s main focus is work and there’s nothing above work. Therefore, they have troubled personal life. The divorce rates are twice as much than a normal couple.
Divorce can be expected because workaholic person don’t care about anything other than their work. The children don’t get enough attention from their parents. Author claimed that workaholic parent place high expectations on their children and I don’t agree with that. Since they spend most of the time working or thinking about work, they don’t have time to sit and talk to their children. The social structure of the family is not in place.
