He started by going into detail how returning inmates no longer surprised him. He actually expected for these people to return. He said people should be surprised by the recidivism rate or the fact that it is growing each year. There are many factors that can be contributing to the increasing recidivism rate. Prevention steps are not being taken and action is only taken once an individual reaches adulthood. In some prisons they have programs such as yoga and even one that provides cats to inmates. There is no reason why we should benefit people who have committed crimes. Even t.v., visitation, and mail are can be labeled is luxuries for those who refuse to efficiently contribute as a member of society. It is imperative that those who are incarcerated feel completely excluded from the rest of society so that when they are reunited with society they won’t take that freedom for granted.
When comparing the two states of California and Arizona the recidivism rate is drastically different. In Arizona inmates are forced to follow a military based schedule based on sleeping in tents, growing their own food, and performing certain military drills. While in California the treatment of inmates are much more lenient. In this state food, clothes, healthcare, etc. are provided for free to the inmates. This can be very alluring for some people to return to prison because the stress of money is virtually taken
