“Somewhere in America a woman is raped every 2 minutes” (Maloney). This statistic shows the harsh reality of being a female. A majority of Americans will experience rape or sexual assault at some point in their lives. Sexual assault in America is a problem. The solution to that issue is to offer safe spaces for the victims to report sexual assault and to get help. Also, to educate students and the public that sexual assault is not acceptable and explain the consequences. Law enforcement needs to become stricter in the rape cases they get and respond rapidly. Humans do not realize that rape and assault takes a part of your confidence and comfort away. Victims are left afraid and hopeless. Having someone use your body for their pleasure without your okay sends your world spiraling downward. You may feel like you have hit a dead end. Stay strong and reach out for help. The trauma that victims of all ages and genders is life altering. The way you think is changed as well as your personality. RAINN shows that children are also affected by stating, “Every 8 minutes, Child Protective Service responds to a report of sexual abuse” (“Who are the Victims?”). Some severe cases have resulted in the murder of the victim. Less horrific cases can result in bruises, cuts, scrapes, broken bones and worst of all emotional disorders. Nova, a website dedicated to the victims of sexual assault and rape, says, “Possible Physiological Effects of Sexual Assault are: Hyper-vigilance, Insomnia, Exaggerated startle response, Panic attacks, Eating problems/disorders, Self-mutilation, Sexual dysfunction, Hyper-arousal” (“Rape and Sexual Assault”). These effects can ruin someone 's life if they do not get the help that they need to cope. Rape can also end in pregnancy. The mother of the child has the right to do whatever she feels best doing with the child whether it is keeping it, aborting it, or putting it up for adoption.
