In the story the kids on the island have a vote for who will be leader of the island. The kids vote for jack. Not only was he the leader when they voted but he was also one before he found the shell. If someone gets out of line he will try to fix them. When they lit the bonfire Ralph was a little careless about his surroundings, but when Piggy told him about the boy with the birthmark on his face Ralph got concerned. In being concerned that showed he cared about the others and was trying to be a good leader and keep them alive as long as possible. When they got back to the bottom of the mountain he made a search party to look for the kid. Piggy would probably just mourn over the kid and not do anything. And Jack would just keep hunting even after hearing about this
