The ability to drive serves as a great milestone for many teenagers. However, this right of passage raises many concerns. Some argue that the minimum driving age should be raised from sixteen to eighteen; others argue the opposite. I believe, however, that the driving age should not be raised from sixteen to eighteen. Many argue that raising the driving age from sixteen to eighteen will reduce the number of serious or fatal road accidents that occur in the United States; however, this may not necessarily be true. Raising the driving age won't necessarily prevent teen driver crashes -- it could just delay some of them. The type of driver you are does not rely solely on your age, it depends on your personality. It is not guaranteed that one eighteen-year-old will be the superior driver in comparison to another sixteen-year-old. Driving yourself makes you aware of responsibilities such as filling up the gas tank before it runs out, making sure to get directions to where you are going, and leaving on time so you are not late. If driving is taken away from adolescents, they would lose that opportunity to begin learning responsibility. If teenagers have to wait until they are eighteen to be able to drive, they will remain dependent on parents practically until they ready to go off to college, join the military, or take a civilian job. At some point, teenagers have grow up and prepare for the real world. Learning to drive is one of the very first steps into adulthood, and if the driving age is raised from sixteen to eighteen, I believe that taking on all of the responsibilities of being a young adult, including driving, at once will be too much to handle.
