Racism is everywhere. Commercials and ads in magazines almost promote and make the stereotypes and racism in the world worse. The most common ways is making fun of the way someone may act and speak and generalizing that into every person of a certain race is that way. The worst ads found are usually during huge events like the super bowl where millions of viewers are watching them. It’s important for advertisers to be careful what they promote because it can easily offend someone’s race or culture. Advertisers try to appeal to certain types of people by trying to stay hip. For example, the Chicago-Lake liquor ads were completely unacceptable and highly offensive to African Americans. The ads used ridiculous slang used by two men in the workplace. …show more content…
The first ad I found was a large build board of a taller white woman grabbing the face of a shorter black man. This build board gave off the idea that the white woman had dominance over him and that he was not an equal to her. Another ad that received backlash was the commercial that aired during the super bowl where Ashton Kutcher was dressed in brownface portraying an Indian man named Raj for a dating service. This ad received backlash because brownface is always known as being offensive, the actor was wearing a stereotypical outfit to play the Indian man, and he used an accent. There was an older ad that received negative reviews where a panda was talking in a harsh Asian accent and using names such as “Ling Ling and Ching Ching.” The harsh accent made it seem that the advertisers were mocking them and saying that everyone of that race sounds like that. Lastly, I think racism will always be around, unfortunately. It’s our generation that can change our mindset and become more open minded of others. We should be able to expand our horizons and learn about others that may be different than us and bring us out of our comfort
