Essay On Racism And Psychology

This week’s reading and discussion focused on Psychology, race, racism and the rise of neuroscience. On account of having two distinct themes (race and neuroscience), I will briefly summarize my understanding and explain my train of thought on both topics. Firstly, I will discuss the relation between psychology and racism before briefly concluding with the importance of sciences in Psychology. An interesting component involving race and psychology is that racism did not even existed before the 1930s. In fact, races formed an evolutionary hierarchy with the Europeans at the top and indigenous at the bottom (Richard, 2010). A doctrine now called “Scientific Racism” (Richard, 2010). By looking back at history, Psychology has been a huge promoter …show more content…
As an undergraduate student who is fairly curious about a variety of opinions, I have heard about many movements including feminism and “black lives matter”. I promote and believe in both movements, as equality should be an innate right but overtly and covertly. However, I feel that the message of these movements are not well understood by everyone. Going back to power, I feel that the division of people is one of the ways that has been used to control a population since centuries. This major issue arises in political ideologies, equality movements or any other doctrine that divide people in different groups. Psychology has been used for a long time to “scientifically” show race differences so that people could identify themselves to a certain group and compete against the others. Gender is another topic that underwent similar discrimination as race in most culture and in the scientific literature. There are still many studies focusing on gender differences and I believe that it is still the case for race differences. This class made me realized that you can’t believe everything that is written in scientific journal article. You need to form an opinion based on both empirical evidence and the sociocultural context you are living

"Mixed Blood” In this article the author intends to demonstrate that the idea of race is only a social/cultural development and a myth. The idea that individuals divided into particular race based on their "biological differences" is a fantasy it’s a myth, everything is just in our heads we have just created it as a community/society, race is not a thing that was always here, it’s only been here since humans have. And the author does a very good job explaining this with good scientific and historical facts that no one can disagree too. This article helped me realize the author’s message (of race just being in our heads), this is not something that I would have really thought about ever if it wasn’t for this article.…

Philosophers have developed concepts they consider are sufficient for defining racism. One philosopher is Tommie Shelby. Shelby presents his reasoning for why we should view racism as an ideology, or a system of beliefs that constitute social oppression. Shelby opposes Garcia who accepts that beliefs do not contribute to racism because one should be able to explain one’s beliefs; in some cases, the subjects cannot. This means that racial discrimination is not just about the individual but also society.…

Worse Than Slavery looks into the severe details of a ruthless period in our nation’s history when defeated white southerners and emancipated freed men rebuilt their area. They established new economic relationships and make new social statues in the late nineteenth century. Ironically, the cruel foundation of slavery overpowered the most intense racism violence. Slavery was a classification of harsh white control over most black people and it made black slaves more treasured in an innocently economic sense. However Without these established restrictions, freedmen were more defenseless and less treasured to resentful southern whites.…

The election of president Barack Obama on November 4, 2008 will forever be remembered as a huge victory for racial equality in the United States. Less than fifty years after the discontinuation of legalized segregation, the citizens of America voted a black man into the highest office in the land. This is no doubt concrete representation of the significant gains America has made in the battle for unilateral socio-economic racial equality. Despite this victory, evidence of prevailing inequality continues to manifest in many vital areas of social life such as the housing market, unemployment, income, and school funding. Clearly race does still matter.…

I never really thought too much about racism when growing up. Maybe that is due to my upbringing. I was raised in a small diverse country town where, for the most part, everyone got along. Not to say that there was no racism; it just was not seen very often. Some would call me lucky to have been so naïve in my microcosm.…

All throughout time, people have been divided due to their differences. People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…

The NAACP’s mission is very relevant to the field of psychology, which is the study of science behavior and mental processes. The goal of psychology is to describe and to explain human and animal’s behavior as well their mental processes so that we are able to gain a better understanding of why people or animals behave and think in certain ways. The psychology field also aims to predict the behaviors and mental processes of animals and humans.…

    How Is Racism Beneficial

    • 483 Words

Racism all around the world is all based on peoples selfish ideas of what a person should look like. I was in middle school when I was in eighth grade and the racism there was so extreme that even when someone would say the color “white” or “black” they were labeled racist. In this essay I hope to show that racism is useless, that it is exaggerated, and that it can also be extremely hurtful and discouraging. In public school in the USA, racism has become a big problem.…

Phrenology is a pseudo practice of medicine focusing on the measurements of the human skull and how that relates to basically every trait of the person, be it physical or character trait. Scientific Racism is defined as the use of similar ostensible medicinal and pseudo-scientific methods to justify the theory of racism. It is the practice of classifying individuals of different phenotypes into discrete races, historically this has received much credence in the community, although now the practice is considered pseudo-scientific (Audiopedia, 2016). According to Gonzalo Chillida Scientific Racism is a doctrine which "affirmed the inherited biological determinism of the moral and intellectual capacities of an individual, and the division of groups…

Racism has been around for many years and it is an issue that has never been fully resolved, although some may believe that it has. It is not uncommon to see crimes being mentioned everywhere but thanks to the media, we have seen the many incidents occurring recently involving white cops and black men, hence we have come to realize how racist we really are as a society and how big of an issue racism actually is even now. In the textbook Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, we are introduced to some of the first sociologists and their theories. Two sociologists that are relevant to present issues about racism would be Emile Durkheim and W.E.B. Du Bois.…
