Race" and "ethnicity" are compound terms which are often used conversely. The terms were divided to label “race” as a biological quality and “ethnicity” as a social phenomenon. This dissimilarity reflects efforts to distinguish between sex and gender. When race is grouped as a social category, it is noted that humans differ abnormally in wealth, exposure to environmental toxins, and access to medicine which can cause health inconsistencies. African Americans, for example, have higher rates of mortality than other racial groups for 8 of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. (Race, Ethnicity, and Genetics Working Group, 2005). It is only just and right to have programs like these available which creates a sense of comfort and relieve to the different races and ethnic groups who would be considered as minorities. A good example is evaluation of servicemembers. When a mission needs to be accomplished and two to three servicemembers are tasked with doing the same job, the servicemember who did best does not have to be single handedly rewarded for the performance and effort.
