Although people claim that there aren’t injustices in the world today and that our society is equal, it’s really not. The injustices faced today connect to the racism of the 1930s in Sharon Draper’s novel Stella by Starlight. Stella’s mother was sick and the white doctor wouldn't see her and Stella’s father had to take a difficult test to vote and pay poll tax. African Americans were looked down upon and albeit this may not be the case now, there are several other discriminatory actions that people are confronted with everyday. Women are paid less than men and don’t receive promotions as often, some races and groups are being treated as more superior than others, and LGBTQ people are not being treated equally.There was severe discrimination

Women in the workforce are less likely to be promoted and are paid less for the same jobs as men. Men make $300-$400 more than women do for several jobs, even though more women occupy these fields. A recent study shows that from entry level positions, men are 30% more likely to be promoted to manager. In vice president positions, 71% are men and only 29% are women. In addition to women, people who identify as LGBTQ also face injustices. Some people have been fired from their jobs, or just weren’t hired at all, for being gay.It doesn’t stop there, LGBTQ identees also receive harassment, bullying, and violence in schools, all because people can’t be accepting of their sexual orientation. In the news recently, you hear about “Black Lives Matter” and “Blue Lives Matter”, but, shouldn't all people matter equally? No group or race should be above another, and if we eliminated these injustices, we would lessen the problems we have today.
