Satan’s moment of introspection was perplexing to me. Satan admitted his obsessive drive for revenge is self-destructive, but he still continues with his plan. “Revenge, at first though sweet, Bitter ere long back on itself recoils. Let it; I reck not, so it light well aimed, Since higher I fall short, on him who next Provokes my envy, this new favorite Of Heaven, this man of clay, son of despite, Whom, us the more to spite, his Maker raised From dust: spite then with spite is best repaid” (2791, 171-8).
Eve surprised me with her outspokenness. First, she suggests she and Adam split up their Garden duties suggesting, “Let us divide our labors; thou where choice Leads thee, or where most needs” (2792, 214-5). Later, when Eve feels Adam has insulted her by questioning the strength of her faith, she calls him out on it with, “Thoughts, which how found they harbor in thy breast, Adam, misthought of her to thee so dear?” (2793, 288-9). Finally, Eve goes so far as to call God a liar when she is telling Adam about the Tree saying, “This Tree is not as we are told, a Tree Of danger tasted, nor to evil unknown Opening the way, but of divine effect To open eyes, and make them Gods who taste; And hath been tasted such” (2806-7, 863-7). …show more content…
