Another difference is that during the time of the Puritan colonial life and the War of Independence, everyone was allowed to be educated and was able to read freely in evidence of how literate the “Speech at the Virginia Convention” was as well as everyone else during that time period while the slaves were not to be more educated than of those who labeled themselves as a higher position as them, or else they would be punished. During the Virginia convention, Patrick Henry said, “Sir, we are not weak, if we make a proper use of those means which the God of nature hath place in our power” (234).
