A probation officer works with individuals who are serving probation instead of jail time. They must keep in contact with the offenders and their family members at all time to make sure that they meet all the terms of their probation; sometimes, they drug testing those under their supervision. Probation officer’s job is to fulfill many roles for the individuals; they offer treatment options, help individual find jobs and keep track of their progress. They are basically a supervisor and a mentor for the offenders who are released from the jail or on probation. Their goal is to rehabilitate offender.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), probation officers must work with the courts as well, analyzing a probationer's file so the judge can determine an appropriate sentence for the offender. A lot of offenders are upset and angry, so the probation officer has to have the skills to calm their temper down. Probation officer don’t get to choose which offender they want to supervise, it’s all up to the court to decide, so it causes tough on probation officer’s transportation. They are expected to travel long distance just to meet the offender they supervise. Sometimes, the offender would carry a weapon in public for their own protection, it can be difficult and stressful for probation officer to deal with that environment.
