Prescription medications can only be administered under the supervision of a doctor, DNP, or any other medically licensed professional with the capability of prescribing, so how come there is still the issue of painkiller abuse? According to the center for disease control over 40 people are dying from prescription painkiller abuse everyday simply because some doctors cannot afford to treat their patients better than just a chart, simply because some doctors are over with their examinations before the patients start explaining his/her symptoms, simply because some doctors cannot wait to get to the next available patient. Doctors are not just healers, they are listeners. Any doctor should try as much as possible to make prescription painkiller the last resort, not only for the benefit of the patient alone but also for the benefit of the society. As of 2012 there was a quarter billion prescriptions of opium within the United States. The fact remains that these medications are called RX medications for a reason. They need to be prescribed after a thorough examination. The decision to put a patient on a prescription painkiller should not be handled with levity.
