Newborns are the cutest things on the planet. You cannot help but fall in love with that little bundle of joy, and they steal your heart forever. Sometimes their decision to enter the world has a different timetable than expected. You might be the parents of a preemie.
The Mayo Clinic’s definition of a premature birth is a birth that takes place more than three weeks before the baby is due. A premature birth is one that occurs before the start of the 37th week of pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, a normal pregnancy last about 40 weeks. In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control state that preterm births affected one of every 10 infants born in the U.S.

Coping with a Premature Birth
Emotions take us in many directions and after the birth of a preemie; you are on a heightened sense of urgency. There are many ways to help your family cope with the unexpected. First, lean on your family and friends for support. They want to help and there is strength in numbers. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
NICU
The NICU is a hub of daily activity with physicians, nurses and other medical personnel caring for your newborn. NICU staff are compassionate caregivers who are sensitive to your concerns. It can be overwhelming for new parents as they try to learn as much as they can about their baby’s health condition and what they can do to help. Fear and worry may creep into your thoughts, but it will be important to stay focused and positive.
Spend as much quality time with your baby as you can. Stay informed about your baby’s progress and talk with the medical team. Meet the parents of other preemies who have experienced some of the things you are going through. Many NICU units have family advisors to offer support and
