Challenging behaviors happen for a reason and when a child display a challenging behavior there is something that they are trying to accomplish. If this behavior did affect the child development and people around him/her positively, there would not be a need to replace this behavior. That is why when selecting a positive replacement behavior there are some strategies and guidelines that must be follow in order for that replacement behavior to be taught successfully. Occasionally, it has to do with the fact that they do not know an alternative way to positively get what they want or need without harming themselves or others, which is why positive replacement behavior is taught. A successful replacement behavior will have the same results that give the similar purpose as the challenging behavior. If the replace behavior gives a different result, the student will not adopt it because it does not contribute to getting what they want or need. As you can see, the behavior is goal directed; it exhibited in order to achieve something. Therefore, if engaging in the behavior will not get them what they need, they will continue to use the challenging behavior because when they engage in that particular behavior they accomplish their goal. When the challenging behavior functions the same way as the replacement behavior, it make the replacement behavior easier to adapt, and they come to realize that they are alternative way to acquire what they want and need without hurting themselves and others. Also it is essential that the replacement behavior can be apply in settings other than the school, at different time, and the behavior should not seem odd in social setting and its should be possible that the behavior can be reinforce in home environment.
