Once we started discussing Popular culture phenomenon’s in class I was slightly perplexed. My confusion in itself was confusing as We all join in on, or at least observe popular culture phenomenon’s daily. Since the internet became so prevalent we start to see an exponential rise in cultural phenomenon’s popping up. The western world especially has an irritating amount, of constantly new fads and phenomenon’s that most of us feel we should follow. Following these trends keeps us “in the loop”, no one wants to be excluded from the most recent Trends that everyone talks about. For example, when I think Pokémon go it’s a very strong symbol of social connection in cities and towns. With my time of playing this game me and my friends talked and connected to hundreds of other players face to face, talking about the game, and strategies to gain more Virtual creatures. This game gave my entire city an interconnectedness that hasn’t been seen for a long time. Our downtown and city center had meet ups every night, having literally hundreds of people turn out each night, these were people of all ages, sex and race coming together just to play a game. Outside of my own town, other cities created clubs and groups to enjoy something as simple as a video game. Of course the game had grossed over 100’s of millions of dollars in its downloads advertisements and its payable upgrades. But Pokémon go had also created economic upturn for people in our own cities. Many restaurants and stores in town would have an increase in customer traffic as they would add lures or special upgrades in their stores that you could get upon entry. Anything from gas stations, corner stores, bars and restaurants could benefit from using Pokémon go to attract players into their establishments. This worked so well that there were many articles published about “growing your business using Pokémon go”. Other people were able to create Pokémon go merch, such as t-shirts, hats and backpacks to wear when you played. Some people went as far as to advertising their own Pokémon go shuttle business out of there vehicle for 30 dollars an hour they would drive you around to catch your Pokémon. Overall a lot of people besides the developers of the app were able to make significant amounts of money off the games
