Essay On Political Correctness

Political correctness is a problem that has swept over America in recent years. Every word anyone says in all walks of life, from politics, to business, to school, has become politically correct to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings. Everybody is a victim and everybody gets butthurt at the simplest words or phrases that come out of a guy’s mouth. The American society as an entirety has become too politically correct, from the politics of our government, to the businesses of our economy and the people who represent them, and to the classrooms of our nation’s high schools, colleges, and universities. How is the term “politically correct” defined exactly? Political correctness can be defined in different ways by different people, but all the definitions …show more content…
Donald Trump might not be politically correct, but he is not immune to the backlash from the words that come out of his mouth. For example, when he made controversial comments about punishing women who attain abortions, he had an army of feminists around the country out for blood. And now that I mentioned feminists, I’ll bring up valid points made in the article on political correctness in The Economist. The article talks about how feminists call for all communications to be gender neutral, meaning turning firemen to firefighters. Feminists also prefer people to stop using the word “he” in a general sense and start using gender neutral terms or including a “her” along with the “he.” So now society has to comb through papers and speeches to replace any gender specific words to a gender neutral alternative for what? Oh yeah, to avoid having the feminist army come down in full force on them yelling “sexist.” The punishment for not saying what a group of people deem as “politically correct” is the angry mob at your door tomorrow. There is an immense pressure on politicians, businesspeople, and other high profile people to be politically correct in every aspect of their lives. The backlash politicians and other high profile personalities experience from a reprehensible comment can cost them elections, jobs, and of utmost importance to them;

    Recently, political correctness has swept into the forefront of modern day culture. The term has come to mean a variety of things, but at its core is an idea that words and actions should not offend or make anyone uncomfortable. However, South Park has managed to remain strong to its roots by still being inflammatory and offensive with the series continuing to draw heaps of criticism from many different groups. While South Park may not conform to what polite society expects, it manages to provide biting satire and commentary. Marcus Schulzke argues in “South Park and the Transformation of Meaning” that a hateful word’s meaning can be changed over time which can be seen in “The F-Word” in which the boys call a group of loud bikers “fags” as they try to get them to leave town (2012).…

    To me the word means- to prejudge, criticized for no reason...like in the past if you were not white, with blond hair, and blue eyes your life didn’t matter in Hitler’s eyes. Or when Martin Luther King was around (Not so long ago) if you were African American you had to go to different schools,restaurants, bathrooms, Seats in the movie theatre, buses. All because you weren't white, that’s racism. Criticizing someone for their color, their religion, or race, or beliefs or prejudging someone for what they wear or what they like. Not for some stupid reason like wearing black and white on the same day or being white and your name is Mr. Black.…

    In Lindy West's’ essay, “‘Political correctness’ doesn’t hinder free speech- it expands it,” she argues against Jonathan Chait definition and political views from an interview with Audie Cornish, on National Public Radio. On the radio they talked “...about activism and political correctness on today's college campuses.” In her essay, West implies that Jonathan Chait and ‘company’ are in agreement that black Americans being killed by government people ‘are the real puppetmasters of an authoritarian regime.’ West writes this piece very sarcastically when she says ‘Right.’…

    I think women shouldn’t be offensive about being sexist anymore, and be more grateful on how good we have it today. Although sexism is still out there, and is crucial in certain countries, we are still very lucky to live in America. Everywhere around us, you constantly hear that you can be whatever you want and follow your dreams, and it’s true! A woman has the same rights as a man! Women can vote, be a doctor, an athlete, and can even be the president of the United States!…

    For years now, people have tried to be more “politically correct” in everything they say or do. “Political correctness,” I have observed does not only pose problems for those in the majority but for the minorities as well. While on the surface this seems to be just a way of being considerate and kind to fellow human beings, I believe it is actually hurting society as a whole. When majority members cannot speak candidly, members of under-represented groups also suffer. What it results in is that no one, even the minorities it tries to protect, can discuss their concerns about fairness and fears without falling into the negative stereotypes.…

    Political correctness has gone too far To simply question the use of political correctness can get you marked as a target by large leftist groups. Political correctness is defined by dictionary.com as being “Marked by or adhering to a typically progressive orthodoxy on issues involving especially ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or ecology.” The term “politically correct,” while originally meaning to be in line with political doctrine, was adopted and popularized by the New Left in the 1970’s because of the essay “The Black Woman” by Toni Cade (Gary). The term is now almost exclusively associated with the authoritarian left.…

    The feminist movement is a prevalent force across the nation and is fighting for equal rights for women. One of the main attributes to women not being treated the same as a man is the societal roles that are still in place for both. The only way to move away from gender inequality is to try and stop every instance of it from occurring and to not let it prevail in society. Donald Trump’s rhetoric used to objectify and defame women is the means for the perpetuation of gender inequality in the United States. It is understandable to assume that not every instance of gender discrimination or racial discrimination can be ceased in present society.…

    One of the major ongoing problems in the United States is racism and discrimination. This dates all the way back to when Native Americans or Indians were forced to migrate to other lands by the Europeans. In this society, every minority, mainly African Americans, Native Americans, Islamic and Muslim people, are the target of some type of discrimination and unfairness. Unfortunately, it is only getting worse. Since the time of the Trail of Tears, this type of discrimination has changed.…

    Summary of “In Defense of Prejudice” In the United States, it can be seen almost anywhere that societies are becoming more and more conscious of the words they use to describe people, in the case of accidentally offending someone. However, when some words are determined as being “hate-speech” and are deemed criminal, the notion of free speech begins to be altered. With certain words now being treated as legitimate violence against another, where does one draw the line when considering one’s constitutional right to free speech, even when that person is obviously prejudiced? In Jonathan Rauch’s essay, “In Defense of Prejudice”, he argues that instead of eradicating all forms of prejudice in the United States,…

    America today, pressured by political correctness and social acceptances, has been reduced to become a country where we are more concerned about hurting people’s feelings or protecting our reputations. This mindset has caused America, the country where we used to be able to say what we want-- when we want-- how we want, to become a country overrun by what would sound better than what would be more effective. Our own government has trampled our rights as citizens under free speech, the right to bear arms, and the freedom of religion. We are becoming a society where one thing is absolutely right and anyone who thinks different is condemned a homophobe, racist, extremist, or terrorist. Our Reconstructionist officials (liberals/government activists)…
