Portrayal of City through Film
This course had four learning outcomes attached to the class. These outcomes included discussing the evolution of cities through film, having the ability to evaluate how filmmaking can convey messages about the past, present, and future urban space, identify key issues facing urban region, and lastly be able to communicate my analysis thru written medium. The first outcome was performed through discussion at the conclusion of each movie. The second and third learning outcomes will be conveyed through my two reflection paper. The siblings end up becoming trapped in the 1950’s tv show located in Pleasantville, Iowa. Upon arriving the siblings find that the residents of Pleasantville are perfect. It’s only after Jennifer has sex with a boy from Pleasantville's high school that things begin to change. Much like Pleasantville, the movie, The Truman Show revolves around the life of no other than Truman. Unbeknownst to Truman he is the star of a reality TV show that is broadcast around the clock throughout the entire world, following Truman’s every move. The movie takes place within a large dome that holds the city of Seahaven. All the residents of Seahaven are actors, and during Truman’s college years he falls in love with Sylvia. Sylvia is abruptly taken but in her short time tells Truman to go to Fiji to find her. The producers are able to discourage Truman from traveling by instilling an aquaphobia by having his father “die”, in a boating accident. Unlike the first two movies, Fruitvale Station doesn’t depict the perfect resident or the perfect city. Fruitvale Station is a film based on the events leading up to the shooting and death of Oakland, California resident Oscar Grant.
