On December 3, 1842, in Warner, New Hampshire, Charles Alfred Pillsbury was born to George Alfred Pillsbury and Margaret Pillsbury. He was the eldest of three children, the other two being Fred C. Pillsbury and Mary Addie who died a year after birth. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1863

His winning personality, his travels, and his public appearances made him a very famous American miller. He was friendly with all his employees. For five years the firm tried new profit-sharing plan that had over $150,000 paid to employees. He also helped Minneapolis coopers to start their cooperative shops. This plan worked for several years and it is a perfect example of producers' cooperation. He made large gifts to charitable and philanthropic events and companies. He was also somewhat interested in politics. From 1878 to 1885 he was a member of the state Senate, but held no other official position.
Observing the significance of this man is very paramount to our time, as he is the reason the milling industry has changed for the better.
