Philosophy of Adult Education & Learning Mark Ramsey
• Teaching with greater depth and breadth is important so they interact with other tradesmen, engineers, inspectors, etc. Equip individuals with the skills & substantive knowledge that allows them to define & to pursue their own goals.1
• Give students a place to "hang" new knowledge off of what students already know from past experiences and courses, i.e., root beer in cup with foam can be related to apparent power, true power & reactive power, respectively. Transmission of knowledge needs to be related to past systems that the students associate with new information.1
• Provide instruction with the thought of improving the students standard of living and bettering their socio-economic position by giving them the tools to succeed in today's competitive workplace. Vocational …show more content…
I see education as the fostering of inquiry & reasoning.1 Encourage students to become lifelong learners.
• Each lesson to adult learners needs to be short & brief, I've kept my lessons into several small sessions with enough practice time after instruction & demonstration. besides, I do believe the importance of clear instructions, it should be simple & short regardless the level; the teaching points also need to be minimized no matter how intelligent the students are. Effective learning occurs only when students stay focused. 2
• Skills verses competencies: Problem solving, propose solutions with multiple choices then list the positive and negative aspects of each choice. Be self-motivated, self-starting, arrive 15 minutes before the established start time ready to work, don't abuse breaks, eighth hours pay for eight hours of work. Remember we are in a customer service industry. If you break something tell someone you did. If you don't know the equipment or the task ask. Demonstrate soft skills to them, i.e., respect all
