Like with everything in California, becoming a licensed pharmacy technician has several requirements. But surprisingly, the level of education is not as high as one would think. The pharmacy technician application takes forty-five days to be processed and requires a $140 non-refundable application fee (Pharmacy Technician Application Instructions, 2017). The basic education requirement needed is only a high school diploma or an equivalent like a general education development certificate (GED). So, we can safely assume that someone as young as 17 years of age can apply for a pharmacy technician license (Pharmacy Technician Application Instructions, 2017). Next, are the pharmacy tech documents – which you are required to only show proof of one of the following. One, an affidavit of completed coursework or graduation. This includes an associate degree in pharmacy technology or any coursework that requires a minimum of 240 hours of instruction. Two, is a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified (Pharmacy Technician Application Instructions, 2017). According to the PTCB website, all you need for eligibility is… "High school diploma or equivalent educational diploma (e.g., a GED or foreign diploma)*.

The third form of proof can be from the National Healthcare Association Pharmacy Technician Certification Program or ExCPT certificate. The only requirements is having a high school diploma and pharmacy technician or pharmacy-related training within the last five years. The pharmacy technician (CPhT) exam costs $115 (Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT), 2018). Lastly, is military training.
