"A joyous masterclass of physical comedy and general disaster" (Fiona Mountford, 2015)

In Peter Pan Goes Wrong, by Mischief Theatre, the much-loved members of The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society battle against collapsing sets, flying mishaps and numerous miscues on their way to Neverland with hilarious and disastrous results, much to the dismay of any stage manager. I watched this play on the 17th of November mid-way through their second Christmas run at the Apollo Theatre, London. Here, Mischief Theatre cleverly time perfect mishaps playing on the audience’s love for backstage and onstage catastrophes.

In the opening scene George Darling asks for a spoon to give the children their medicine. Since the spoon was missing the only thing available was a pair scissors, which resulted in the medicine being poured all over floor and George Darling slipping and falling in the spillage. This, although extremely funny, could be very dangerous without a lot of rehearsal and careful planning from the stage management team. This very intricate form of slap stick comedy is used a lot throughout the play, from a gobo falling from the rigs inches away from actor’s heads or parts of the set falling on top of actors. The actor playing Lucy Grove, or Tootles with in Cornley Polytechnic’s Production, is the victim of most of these physical slap stick jokes. She is trapped under falling trees, thrown off ships and ends up in a wheel chair. Her character would not be as comical without this careful planning and the use of clever set devises, to create the idea of ladders collapsing and wooden planks hitting her in the face. These devises make the audience believe the actors have actually been the victim of many unfortunate set

In the play “The C Above C Above High C” by Ishmael Reeds, the writer focuses to analyze the effects and use of unrealistic elements which categorically affect the play. By use unrealistic elements the author is indeed able to open up the dominion of possibilities and has unlimited options in front of them. This play really imparts itself to the use of these unrealistic elements since in most part of the play is about people speaking and conversing about topics or events that others do not see or do not happen at that same time. A good example of this is when Mamie Eisenhower is in a highlight watching Dwight and his mistress Kay Summersby in the hotel room where they just had a fling.…

On the evening of Saturday October 8th, the cast of the play Fuddy Meers took the stage and put on a unique and exquisite performance. The play took place in the Temple Theatre which I found was a highly interesting venue. There were several different elements that I found greatly intriguing during the course of the ninety minute performance, however, there were a few elements that I felt were also lacking. The first element that I believed helped to add significance to the performance was the stage setup(1). The revolving setup of the stage was perfect for this play and it allowed much versatility for the characters during specific instances.…

I saw the play Peter and the Starcatcher, written by Rick Elice, on Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Elice’s comedic play acts as the prequel to J.M. Barrie’s play Peter and Wendy since it gives backstory to the character Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatcher features the protagonist Peter Pan, originally a nameless orphan, who meets the brave Molly Aster while on a ship. The kids have a run in with Captain Black Stache’s band of pirates as they try to recover a chest filled with the Queen’s treasure. I will go into more detail analyzing the plot, characters, and production of Elice’s play.…

She is the representation of what can happen if an entire human body (except a brain) is replaced with a metallic one. Her performance is viewed as inhuman. However, she still retains her connection to the audience through the laugh (voice). She has many qualities that are unattainable for humans (dancing and singing techniques, physical and noise shock forces).…

One of the stand out technical features of this production was the set. Its softened pale hues from the apartment to the staircases allowed for the vintage aesthetic to truly transport the audience back to the roaring twenties. Glenelg Country School’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” captures how the magic of theatre can truly transport you to another…

In the play, I chose to take on the role of Shuttle, in Mike Wheeler’s educational play “Arson About”. The story is of three high school students who break into their school to find out who is sending threatening letters to one of the characters, to only find themselves trapped in a fire. Because it is a theatre and education play, we chose to set it in a Scottish area to make it more relevant to people at our school. I did a bit of research and found out “Over 1,350 schools in the UK are damaged by fire every year.” This is relevant to the play and has helped me understand both the play itself and my character.…

In The Importance Of Being Earnest, the play by Oscar Wilde, he brings out serious issues through humor and slapstick style of comedy. The cucumber sandwiches scene really brings out the slapstick style of the play. In the play when Jack was eating the cucumber sandwiches and his buddy was trying to get some, he said it was improper to eat the sandwiches. When his buddy asked him why it was okay for Jack to eat the sandwiches he replied with “Well she’s my aunt”. Which is actually ironic because it turns out they are brothers and she was both of their aunts.…

Danny Wallace’s friends like these is an interesting and impressive commentary on his own experience with a process everyone will experience; growing up. There are numerous pressures that come along with aging, some that come with just trying to grow up when you'd much rather just enjoy your life. One major thought that Wallace focus’s on is how Peter Pan Syndrome, a want or need to stay young mentally and physically, can affect anyone. Another major concept that is evident throughout the book is the myth of “having it together”. A final idea that this book portrays shows how Wallace believes that age is just a number, and though he sees growing up as a necessary step, he is still young at heart.…

Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright who composed the entertaining comedy “The Bear”. It is a play about a conflict between two very opposite characters that ends up working out in the end. While Anton Chekhov was growing up his family often faced financial issues which could have given him the inspiration to write this play (biography). This comedy shares similar characteristics with old fashioned Greek comedies that make them funny and entertaining for the audience reading or watching the performance. Certain elements in the play are important to bring the humor out in the work.…
