Essay On Persistence Resilience

Persistence, resilience, and my strong determination were all characteristics I used since being told in an early elementary grade that I may never graduate high school. While at a parent teacher conference, my parents were told that I was not a fluent reader. The teacher felt my reading speed would as negatively impact my other core classes’ grades. The teacher told my parents that being a high school graduate and being a successful individual may not be realistic. To overcome such a label being placed on me took determination, persistence, and resilience. I began receiving assistance from the Title program at my school, and participated in summer school for four summers. I also want to experience the college life Iowa State has to offer. I have participated in several activities on the Iowa State campus such as FFA Convention, Robotics, and All-state Speech. During those events I felt that I had found my college of choice. I plan to pursue a career in agriculture and with Iowa State being one of the top colleges in the nation for ag and my comfort level while attending the events I participated in, I know Iowa state is for me. To have one of the top colleges relatively close to home is also a contributing factor. A few of my talents and skills were described above, but in addition I possess great leadership. I am currently the FFA president, STEM Club President, and Church youth group president. I also serve on the community Prosper committee that enhances positive youth development and strengthen families of which I am the only high school member, which shows my value of being a positive role model to other students.
